About our parish:
The early missionaries who served our area were under the direction of Bishop MacEachern of Prince Edward Island from 1790-1818. From 1818-1823 Broad Cove was served by the parish of Judique with Rev. Alexander MacDonnell as pastor. In 1823, on a visit to the area, Bishop MacEachern noted that there was a small chapel on the Smith property just beyond the bridge in Broad Cove. That church was later replaced by one adjacent to the old cemetery. Later this property was exchanged for the present property, that is where the current church is erected.
The first resident priest was Fr. John Campbell who came to reside in Broad Cove in October 1825. The parish at this time included Port Hood, Mabou, Brook Village, Inverness, Southwest Margaree and their attached missions. As time went on, parishes were established in all of these areas with Inverness becoming an independent parish in 1904. Transportation was difficult and thus an auxilliary church was established in St. Rose in 1954 under the care of pastor, Fr. Michael MacAdam. Once the roads were paved and transportation was easier, this church was closed and parishioners returned to Broad Cove.
Over the years, many priests and persons of religious order were born/raised in Broad Cove. These individuals have served in our diocese and also across Canada. This is a tribute to the great faith of our ancestors. Despite many hardships, religion was the single most important element in their lives. As we celebrate 200 years of devotion and exemplary family life, we are indeed fortunate to have the foundation established by our forefathers.
