
Father Paul Joseph Michael Abbass died Sunday, October 13, 2024. He was age 73 and in his 45th year of priesthood.
He was ordained by Bishop William E. Power on June 24, 1979, at Mount Carmel Church in New Waterford. He served in many different capacities within the Diocese as an Assistant Pastor, Pastor, Chaplain, Director of Talbot House, Episcopal Vicar for Pastoral Services and as Vicar General for nine years retiring in 2019.
He was predeceased by his parents Louis (1999) and Jean (2011).
He is survived by his sister, Darlene Green (New Glasgow); sister, Louise Abbass (Moncton); nieces, Kerri, Brier, Courtney; and nephews, Gregory, Nicholas and their families as well as two aunts and several cousins.
He graduated from Sydney Academy, King’s College, Halifax, St. Paul’s Seminary, Ottawa and was proud to receive an honorary Doctorate of Laws from CBU.
Father Paul was ordained a priest in June of 1979. He served in many parishes throughout his ministry, was Director of Talbot House and ended with retirement as Vicar General for the Diocese of Antigonish. Father Paul engaged with community in a variety of ways including very many local and national boards like the Board of Prison Fellowship and Big Brothers, Big Sisters nationally. It didn’t matter to him how he supported, he just did. He was honoured to receive the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal as well as numerous other awards during his lifetime.
Paul’s journey with cancer was a long and arduous one which he faced with grace, humour, courage and an unwavering joy for life and living.
Funeral Mass on Friday, October 18 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Stellarton. Burial in the parish cemetery.
