Fr. Neil Reginald (Reg) Currie

Fr. Neil Reginald (Reg) Currie

Father Currie passed away Nov. 10, 2015, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with his loving family by his side. Reg was the fourth son, born Tues., May 5, 1931, to the late Michael and Mary (Finnell) Currie of Reserve Mines. After graduating from St. FX University he attended Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax and was ordained to the priesthood in 1961. Fr. Reg served in many parishes throughout our diocese, beginning as a curate at Sacred Heart, Sydney. During the years following he was assigned to parishes in East Bay, Sydney River, Dingwall, New Waterford, Mabou, Inverness, Larry’s River, Westville, River Bourgeois, and Florence. In the 1960s his involvement in YCW and YCS youth groups became one of the highlights of his ministry. In later years he became Spiritual Director for the Prayer Meetings at Our Lady of Fatima, and his involvement as Spiritual Director for the Al-Anon retreats was a “privilege” to him. Until his illness, he volunteered at Loaves and Fishes, Sydney, every Friday.
Fr. Reg cared deeply for his siblings and 22 nieces and nephews and was happiest when attending family gatherings at his home in “DunHuist”, Islandview, or at another’s home. Left to mourn are his sisters, Sister Carmelita, Sisters of Charity, Halifax; Ursula (Michael) MacDonald, Reserve Mines; 22 nieces and nephews, and their families, sisters-in-law Cecilia Currie, Reserve Mines, and Anna Currie, New Waterford; numerous cousins and close friends.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, John (Jake), Michael, and Basil, and sisters Theresa Madio and Angie Campbell; brothers-in-law Neil Amadio and Sandy Campbell and sister-in-law Peggy Currie.
Funeral mass was celebrated Friday, Nov. 13 in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines.
