
Fr. John Michael MacKinnon Father John Michael MacKinnon, age 90, died peacefully at Harbourstone Advanced Care Facility on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John Ambrose and Agnes (Currie) MacKinnon. After graduating from St. Francis Xavier University he entered Holy Heart Seminary and was ordained on June 3, 1950, celebrating his first High Mass on June 18, 1950. Over the years Fr. John ministered in several parishes throughout the diocese including Inverness, Mabou, Brook Village, Main-a-Dieu, and Westville. He was the diocesan coordinator of Pastoral Activities and Director of Gardiner Centre from 1974-79. He then served as pastor of Mount Carmel parish, New Waterford until 1988, and during this time was also Diocesan Vicar General from 1981-88. He was pastor of Immaculate Conception parish in Bridgeport until his official retirement in July 1994. On June 3, 200 at St. Anthony Daniel parish he celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination. Fr. John was loved by his family, friends and parishioners. His friendly manner endeared him to all. His loving support and caring attitude will be a source of fond memories for all of us. Fr. John is survived by his sister, Mary Morley, Halifax, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Catherine MacDonald and Jessie MacKinnon, and six brothers, Daniel, John A., Alexander, Bernard, Sylvester, as well as Francis in infancy. Funeral mass was celebrated Monday, May 25 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, with interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. |
