Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I am writing to express my wholehearted support for the initiative “Dying with Christ—Living with Hope,” which aims to provide compassionate alternatives to euthanasia and assisted suicide. As you may know, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has steadfastly opposed these practices, viewing them as profound violations of the dignity and value inherent in human life.
In light of the troubling trend in our country, where assisted dying has rapidly expanded, we must prioritize life-affirming and compassionate care. This initiative aligns with our commitment to fostering a culture that respects human dignity and offers hope, particularly those suffering.
Developed by Deacon Larry Worthen and assisted by Brad McKinnon, “Dying with Christ—Living with Hope” is a vital resource for our communities. It facilitates meaningful discussions about death and dying within the framework of our faith. I had the privilege of participating in this program and found it timely and transformative. Engaging in conversations honouring our Christian perspective on life, suffering, and death is essential as we navigate these challenging ethical dilemmas.
I encourage all parishes to consider how they can support and promote this initiative as we work toward a national dialogue that emphasizes the importance of palliative care, mental health support, and community solidarity. Together, let us lay a foundation of hope that affirms the value of every individual, especially in their most vulnerable moments.
Yours in Christ,
