Dilexit nos: ‘He loved us’

“‘He loved us’, Saint Paul says of Christ (cf. Rom 8:37), in order to make us realize that nothing can ever “separate us” from that love (Rom 8:39)”

The Holy Father’s fourth Encyclical Letter, Dilexit nos (“He Loved Us”) : on the human and divine love of the Heart of Jesus Christ, was released on Thursday, Oct. 24.
This new Encyclical, focusing on devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, coincides with the ongoing celebrations commemorating the 350th anniversary of the first appearance of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1673.

This new encyclical is seen as drawn from lived experience, rather than the theoretical.
Pope Francis in the early pages states: “Many of the reflections in this first chapter were inspired by the unpublished writings of the late Father Diego Fares, S.J. May the Lord grant him eternal rest.”
Fr Diego, a friend of the pope, died in 2022 at age 66.

The letter also connects ‘Mercy’ and ‘Hope’ … two prominent themes for Pope Francis. The Extraordinary Year of Mercy was in 2016, and the theme of the 2025 Jubilee year is Pilgrims of Hope.
