Year Of Faith 2012-2013
Year of
Faith - a brief introduction
Apostolic Letter: Porta
Fidei Year of Faith: Canadian Conference of
Catholic Bishops
YEAR OF FAITH Pope Benedict has
designated a Year of Faith which began on October 11th, 2012
(50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican
Council) to the Solemnity of Christ the King November 24th,
2013.
The Year of Faith is a “summons to an
authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior
of the world” (Porta fidei 6). The Year of Faith is
an opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion – to
turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with
him. The pope has described this conversion as opening the
“door of faith” (cont'd here)....(see Acts 14:27). The
Year of Faith, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the
Second Vatican Council coincides with the 20th anniversary
of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Pope John Paul II introduced the Catechism in 1992 and noted
that “the principal task entrusted to the Council was to
guard and present better the precious deposit of Christian
doctrine.” When Pope Benedict called the Year of Faith,
he wrote, ““All can find in
the Catechism of the Catholic Church a precious and indispensable tool.
It is one of the most important fruits of Vatican Council II….. it is in
this sense that the Year of Faith will have to see a concerted effort to
rediscover and study the fundamental content of the faith that receives
its systematic and organic synthesis in the Catechism of the Catholic
Church.”

The
Second Vatican Council: What was it and why is it important
today? October 11, 2012, is the 50th anniversary

this, the Episcopal Commission for Doctrine of the Canadian
Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has published a
pastoral letter titled The Second Vatican Council: What was
it and why is it important today? Its publication is
part of the many celebrations surrounding the 50th
anniversary, including today’s celebration in Rome presided
by Pope Benedict XVI. The
Vatican II Pastoral Letter can be found here The pope has
described this conversion as opening the “door of faith” (cont'd
