Diocese Of Antigonish

DIOCESAN PASTORAL CENTRE

OFFICE OF WORSHIP

November 4, 2009

Dear Priests, Deacons and Faithful People of the Diocese of Antigonish,

We are called to care for all our brothers and sisters, as the Lord cares for us, and we have a responsibility to act prudently as good citizens.

In light of the current H1N1 virus spreading in the general population and the concerns expressed by parishioners, we have decided to implement further guidelines for specific aspects of our liturgical celebrations. These practices will serve to direct common practice in this matter throughout our diocese and are consistent with the Archdiocese of Halifax and Yarmouth

At this time we will continue the policy issued on August 26th :

In the present circumstances, do not suppress the Sign of Peace but acknowledge each other without shaking hands.

In addition:

Holy Communion is offered in the form of bread only and is placed in the hand.  The Chalice is not offered. Holy Communion will not be placed on the tongue by the communion minister.

This approach is implemented as a necessary precaution, in response to current increased risk of infection from the H1N1 virus.  Should there be an increase in risk, further guidelines will be issued.

General practices of good hygiene must be followed.  This includes frequent hand washing with soap and water or the use of a hand sanitizing solution.  It is recommended that people stay at home if they have flu symptoms or are feeling unwell, so as to avoid the potential of spreading infections. The obligation to take part in the celebration of Eucharist does not apply to those who are ill. Our diocesan produced “Mass for Shut-Ins” is available on Sunday morning on ATV@ 11:30 am Atlantic Time.

These requirements are effective for all parishes as of Wednesday, November 4, 2009 and are temporary. The office of Worship will send a notification when the present pandemic status improves. Thank you for encouraging and supporting these practices in your community’s liturgical celebrations.
