Bishop Lahey Announces Pastoral Appointments

Bishop Raymond Lahey of the Diocese of Antigonish today announced the following pastoral appointments for the Diocese. Unless otherwise noted, these appointments will take effect 29 June, 2005.

Father P. Alexander MacNeil, VG, until now Parish Priest of Holy Rosary, Westmount, and the Church of the Incarnation, Edwardsville, will be retiring from regular parish ministry, but will remain Vicar General of the Diocese for finance and administration.

Father Douglas Murphy, until now Parish Priest of St Anne, Glace Bay, will become Parish Priest of Holy Rosary, Westmount, and the Church of the Incarnation, Edwardsville.

Father Leo Boone, until now Parish Priest of St. Pius X, Sydney Mines, will become Parish Priest of St Anne, Glace Bay. Father Everett MacDow, until now Parish Priest of Immaculate Heart and St. Augustine, Sydney will become Parish Priest of St. Pius X, Sydney Mines.

Father James Oliver, until now Parish Priest of Immaculate Conception and St. Eugene, Dominion, and St. James, Gardiner will become Parish priest of Immaculate Heart and St. Augustine, Sydney.

Father James Attwood, until now Parish Priest of St. Agnes, New Waterford, St. Joseph, New Victoria, and St. Alphonsus, Victoria Mines, will become Parish Priest of Immaculate Conception and St. Eugene, Dominion, and St. James, Gardiner.

Father Lester Marchand and Father William J. MacPherson will be appointed to serve the New Waterford and Area Pastoral Grouping (Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Agnes, New Waterford, St. Michael, River Ryan, St. Joseph, New Victoria, St. Alphonsus, Victoria Mines, and St. Joseph, Lingan) as a Pastoral Team. Until now, Father MacPherson has been Parish Priest of St. Ann Guysborough, St. Peter, Larry’s River, St. Joseph, Charlos Cove, St. Patrick, Guysborough Interval, and St. Thomas, Salmon River.

The New Waterford and Area Pastoral Grouping will be served also by Deacon Leo Penny, and by Mrs. Viola Penny as a Pastoral Minister. Deacon and Mrs. Penny will continue in their present appointments as Co-Directors for Renewal Programs for the Diocese.

Father Jonathan Nweke, until now Associate Pastor in the New Waterford and Area Pastoral Grouping, to be Administrator of St. Ann Guysborough, St. Peter, Larry’s River, St. Joseph, Charlos Cove, St. Patrick, Guysborough Interval, and St. Thomas, Salmon River.

Father Thomas Morley will become Administrator of St. Mary Polish Parish, Sydney, replacing Father Thomas Lathigee, who has been responsible for the pastoral care of the parish on an interim basis.

Father Duaine Devereaux and Father Robert Day will be appointed to serve the New Glasgow and Area Pastoral Grouping (St. John and St. Gregory, New Glasgow, Christ the King, Trenton, St. Ann, Thorburn, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Pictou Landing) as a Pastoral Team. Ms. Paula Miller will continue to be Pastoral Associate with the New Glasgow and Area Pastoral Grouping.

Father Fredrick Morley, Parish Priest, of St. Columba, Iona, Sacred Heart, MacKinnon’s Harbour, and Holy Rosary, Washabuck, will be resigning from active parish ministry, effective July 27.

Father Charles Donovan, OMI, currently Parish Priest of St. Andrew, Boisdale, and St. Barra, Christmas Island, will continue to be Administrator of St. Barra, and will become also Parish Priest, of St. Columba, Iona, Sacred Heart, MacKinnon’s Harbour, and Holy Rosary, Washabuck, effective July 27.

Father Paul Abbass, Parish Priest of St. Mary, Frenchvale, will become also Parish Priest of St. Andrew, Boisdale, effective July 27.

Father Anthony Chukwunta, until now Associate Pastor, St. Mary, Frenchvale, will become Associate Pastor of St. Theresa, Sydney.

Father Andrew Szulczynski, currently Administrator of St. Joseph, Dingwall, St. Margaret, St. Margaret’s Village, and St. Francis, Smelt Brook, will become Associate Pastor of St. Mary, Frenchvale, and St. Andrew, Boisdale.

Father Andrew Boyd, currently Associate Pastor of St. Ninian Cathedral, Antigonish, will become Parish Priest of St. Joseph, Dingwall, St. Margaret, St. Margaret’s Village, and St. Francis, Smelt Brook.

Father Andrew Gillies, newly ordained, will become Associate Pastor of St. Ninian Cathedral, Antigonish.

Father John Morrison, who has been on leave of absence for health reasons, will resume his appointment as Parish Priest of St. Peter, Ingonish, effective July 9.

Father Piotr Golinski, a priest on loan to the Diocese, who has been Administrator of St. Margaret, Arisag, St. Mary, Lismore, and St. Andrew, Egerton, will be taking up a new appointment in Nanaimo, BC.

Father Victor Ozoufuanya, until now Administrator of St. Peter, Ingonish, will become Administrator of St. Margaret, Arisag, St. Mary, Lismore, and St. Andrew, Egerton.

Father Paul MacGillivray, who has been on sabbatical leave, will resume his appointment as Parish Priest of St. Anthony Daniel, Sydney, effective July 1.

Father Neil MacKenna, currently Chaplain for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, will have sabbatical leave from August 1, for a one year period.

Father Colin MacKinnon, a priest on loan from the Archdiocese of Toronto, will become Chaplain for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, effective September 1.

Father Sarto Ratelle of Les Fils de Marie, until now Administrator of St-Pierre, Chéticamp, and St-Joseph-du-Moine, has been transferred by his society to Quebec, effective 6 June. As of that date, Les Fils de Marie will no longer serve these two parishes.

Father Angus MacDougall, Vicar General of the Diocese, will assume pastoral direction for St-Pierre, Chéticamp, and St-Joseph-du-Moine, effective 7 June, on a temporary basis, while further pastoral provisions are made.

Bishop Lahey said that the following clergy appointments for 2005 had been announced earlier:

Deacon Daniel MacDonald, a newly ordained deacon, is appointed as Deacon to Our Lady of Lourdes, Stellarton, for the summer months, effective May 1, after which he will be returning to St. Peter’s Seminary, London.

Deacon Darryl Marsh, a newly ordained deacon, is appointed to serve with the Canadian Military for the summer months, effective May 1, after which he will be returning to St. Peter’s Seminary, London.

Mr. Douglas MacDonald, a seminarian at St. Peter’s Seminary, London, is appointed to do his Pastoral Internship year at St. Joseph and Our Lady of Sorrows, North Sydney, effective immediately.

Bishop Lahey also noted that further appointments would be announced later in the summer.
